Nation's favourite lyric

As I was flicking between the music channels tonight, I came across an advert that MTV are running to find the Nation's favourite lyric. They've compiled a list of 100 lyrics and you can vote here. I was mildly impressed by the advert because it was saying "What are words and lyrics?" Are they words that make you emotional? Are they ones that remind you of a happy (happier) time? I was quite impressed with that.

My problem is that there are TOO many lyrics that I like.. Then again, I have a problem is saying that one thing is my absolute favourite. I don't have one favourite film, I say that a certain film is one of my favourite films ever. It's near impossible for me to single out just one lyric. My mind immediately goes blank trying to think of a good lyric.. I scan my brain trying to think of a lyric by Rufus or Madonna or Texas (OOOOh! "You can Say what you want but it won't my mind, I feel the same about you" "I stand undressed, but I'm not naked") but I can't think of any that I think do any great justice. For Rufus especially, his lyrics to nearly all his songs are great. Teddy has come up with some gorgeous lyrics too that I have mentioned before. Coldplay's "Yellow" with the lovely "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you." Goldfrapp's "Twist" with the filthy lyrics "Put your dirty angel face, between my legs and knicker lace." But these are all fairly recently artists.. There are classic songs like Bill Wither's "Lean on Me" ("Lean on me when you're not strong, I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on. For it won't be long when I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.") or The Cure's "Pictures of You" ("I've been looking so long at these pictures of you that I almost believed that they're real.") The Eagles with their seminal anthem that is "Hotel California" and the classic lyric "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." And I haven't even mentioned The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Clash....

Now I've just been to that site and they have a fair range of lyrics, but they tend to be popular mainstream ones. Shame, Rufus is one of the best lyricists about. Who else could get away with a lyric like "Pretty things, so what if I like pretty things?" ;)
