They don't make them like that anymore..
The photo above is (as you can see) of Bedders. Bedders is a fish and chip shop that has been in existence for over 50 years and they still serve fish and chips the traditional way. I understand that they get up early every morning to fillet the fish themselves, everything is made on the premises and that would include the pickled onions and the mushy peas (complete with bits of ham). In an age where most fish and chip shops sell at least kebabs or, as is increasingly popular these days, also sell pizzas, (southern style) fried chicken, masala fish etc. etc. It's good to see that Bedders has withstood all these new pretenders and stood firm with the simple ethos of cooking fish and chips very well using incredibly fresh ingredients - And how well they do it! There is constantly a queue in there whenever I go past, even in the picture above, you can see how there's a bit of a queue - and that's considered to be quiet!. What's even more amazing is that given how I've previously mentioned how the new style fish and chips/pizza/kebab shops are popping up all over the place selling "mini" fish and chips for 99p or something and they open from 11am until about midnight every day, Bedders only opens for 2.5 hours every lunchtime (11.30 - 2.00) and the only time they're open in the evening is on Friday evenings, and even then it's only for 3 hours 4.30 - 7.30. And they have been going for over 50 years.
The prices aren't too steep (£3.60 for fish and chips). In fact, they even have plaice and haddock available - I've not seen plaice available in a fish and chip shop for aaages - And even then, it's prolly frozen and in breadcrumbs, but not here at Bedders. For an extra 20p, you can get a fillet of fresh plaice freshly battered and deep fried for you. The restaurant menu (which I forgot to take a picture of) consisted of:
Fish and chips
Double fish and chips
Tinned Roe and chips
Extras:
bread and butter
peas
*THAT'S* simplicity!
And now, the food porn shots:
Check out the crispy bits!
See how pearly white the fish is to show how fresh it is
Note how the peas are a faded green to show they're fresh - Not the luminous green with food colouring that looks like it's more likely to have come from a nuclear plant than a chippy
And how did it taste? Well, I can see why it's been going for over 50 years. Here's hoping that Bedders go on for at least another 50 years!. You can see more pics at my flickr
